Rep. Carol Kent and State Senator Royce West champion kid nutrition DALLAS — Underscoring the importance of healthy eating choices to parents of young children, State Representative Carol Kent, House District 102, and State Senator Royce West, District 23, will partner with the Dallas Dietetic Association to present "Nutrition from the Ground Up: Growing Strong and Healthy Children," from 10 a.m. to noon, on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010. The free event will be held at the Willie B. Johnson Recreation Center, located at 12225 Willowdell Drive in Dallas. Targeted to parents with children ages three through eight, the nutrition-based event will feature registered dietitians from the Dallas Dietetic Association who will discuss and demonstrate nutritious foods for children. "Though genetics dictate much about our health, we do have some control. Helping children make the right food choices at a young age will guide them into making proper nutritional choices that will influence their physical well-being as they get older," said Rep. Kent. “We are pleased to work with Representative Kent and Senator West on this event to promote positive nutrition habits for children,” said Dallas Dietetic Association President, Martha McHenry. “Parents will learn how good nutrition for children can be fun, easy and taste good.” Program topics, "Best Breakfast Bets," "Smart Snacks," and "It's in the Bag," will be presented at three different stations for parents, with food samples available for tasting. There will also be activities and nutritious snacks available for children who attend with their parents. The local nutrition initiative is a precursor to National Nutrition Month, which takes place in March. Though the event is free and open to the public, reservations are suggested as space is limited. For reservations, please e-mail rsvp@repcarolkent.com. "Parents who engage in a daily battle with their children to get them to eat healthy will find this program useful and filled with helpful information,”" said Rep. Kent. "Leading kids down the right path early in life will help them live a healthier future." ###
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Nov. 5, 2009 Texas Physicians Endorse Rep. Kent for Reelection to Texas House District 102 AUSTIN — TEXPAC, the political advocacy arm of the Texas Medical Association (TMA), has endorsed State Rep. Carol Kent for reelection to Texas House District 102. “Texas physicians recognize that Representative Kent is a tremendous advocate for the health of the people of north Texas,” said Susan Strate, MD, chair of the TMA Political Action Committee (TEXPAC) Board of Directors. “She is determined to fight for patients’ ability to see a doctor and get health care when they need to. We need to make sure she wins reelection.” During the 2009 Texas Legislature, Representative Kent worked to make certain health insurers are more transparent and provide patients information they need to make better health care decisions. She worked to ensure patient safety, so patients will have access to appropriately trained and qualified medical personnel. She helped to pass a robust physician loan repayment program to provide our medical school graduates an opportunity to practice in Texas upon completing their training. What’s more, Representative Kent also was a strong advocate of young Texans, knowing how important it is for children to get the health care they need. She worked to improve the Children’s Health Insurance Program and Medicaid. “We look forward to working together with Representative Kent to improve the health of our patients through better policy decisions made by the legislature,” Dr. Strate said. “We urge Representative Kent’s constituents to send her back to Austin to continue her solid work on behalf of our patients.” TEXPAC speaks on behalf of nearly 44,000 Texas physicians and medical students, and nearly 8,000 alliance members. Organized in 1962, TEXPAC is one of the oldest political action committees in Texas. TEXPAC also is one of the largest bipartisan PACs in the state and ranks first in size among other state medical association PACs. – 30 –
